Ganesh Chaturthi Festival

 13 al 23 settembre 2021

In India, the festival of Ganesh, the elephant-headed god, is called Chaturthi Festival and falls on the fourth day of the crescent moon of the month of bhadrapada, according to the Hindu calendar. Therefore, each year it will take place on different days. This festival is important and particularly felt in Maharastra where, to understand, Mumbai is located. In honor of Ganesh, who is very greedy according to Hindu mythology, it is customary to prepare sweets (modaka, laddoo, kadubu, karanjis) to be offered to the deity on domestic altars, in temples or in the streets. Even chariots that are a symbol of the ego split. This is the holiest day dedicated to Ganesh. The people, in honor of what Parvati did, prepare some statuettes in terracotta, plaster or papier-mâché. Ganesh is thus adorned with a red dothi, flower garlands, silk cloth and covered with red ointment and sandal paste. This ritual is called Pranapratishhtha and includes the singing of the Vedic hymns of the Rig Veda, Upanishad, Purana. Theatrical performances are organized with the theme of the contents of the sacred texts. Siu set up camps for blood donation, charity and other charitable initiatives are made. All these religious practices last a few days until the date on which the festival has its most important moment, the Ananta Chaturdashi, is reached. Then the streets are filled with a large crowd, groups of people carrying in procession of the great Ganesh between dances, songs and broken carriages. The Ganesh, both the large ones prepared by skilled craftsmen long before the event, and the small ones made in the family, are brought to the beach and immersed in the sea. Where there is no sea, a river or a lake will receive the figures or even small homemade pods or the tubs of the temples. It is important that Ganesh is brought into the water. Mumbai is the city where this festival is most felt and every year more than 200,000 figures of Ganesh parade. An excellent opportunity for a tour in South India.
